The new 5G technology is coming to our country and soon many terminals will be able to operate with this technology, but not everyone knows what the differences or improvements are compared to 4G or the usual 3G.

The traffic of downloading and uploading content will multiply by ten thanks to the new connections, which will facilitate data downloads in a very short time, for example, a 15-second film in high definition could be downloaded from the internet in less than four seconds with 5G, compared to almost three minutes with 4G connections. Downloading an hour-long playlist from Spotify will take just half a second on 5G. Doing it with 4G would take 20 seconds, while on 3G it would take around 7 minutes.

To browse web pages, 5G will allow you to do it in just 25 milliseconds, compared to 9 tenths of a second for the best 4G. Saving the distances, going from speeds of 200 megabytes per second of 4G to 10 Gigs per second of 5G, could be compared to traveling a distance between Madrid to Barcelona in 6h30 minutes … to doing it in less than 12 minutes.

Low latency is one of its main advantages, that is, in 5G, any impulse is immediate, latency is basic for video conferencing, applications and even autonomous cars among other uses. 4G achieves latencies of 100 milliseconds, 4G + of 20 milliseconds and 5G in just 1 millisecond

Another great advantage will be the ability of 5G to supply the demand for multiple simultaneous connections, which will be multiplied by a hundred compared to 4G. The 5G will be able to connect at the same time to a million devices for each square kilometer.

The 5G Network cannot go down. If that happened, driverless cars would be doomed. The connectivity of the future must be reliable, consistent and stable. While 3G and 4G allowed people to connect to the Internet, 5G will include an infinity of objects called to always talk to each other and without rest.

Another advantage will be the reduction in energy consumption. None of the above would be sustainable if the new network does not optimize the available energy resources. The connection demands of millions of objects could double the current consumption of energy from the network, something that 5G tries to avoid by means of very sophisticated algorithms and increasingly refined processors that require a lower voltage for their operation. According to recent data, the battery consumption of a 5G device will be 90% lower than that of another 4G device in terms of data transmission.

5G broadband is designed to discern traffic and prioritize it in real time based on needs, in the unlikely event of a network saturation, between dedicating bandwidth to the autonomous car or downloading a video, the system will know choose the most convenient.

If the average consumption of 4G data of the Spanish is 9 GB per month, such resources would be exhausted in a dozen seconds. Therefore, 5G on mobile requires the existence of unlimited data at maximum speed, something that is not necessary with previous generations.

Currently in Spain the 5G network is already operational in the main cities, although it is not a “pure” 5G network, since it relies on 4G for its operation, and although its real speed is 1 or 2 Gigas, a lot higher than 4G, it is still far from the theoretical 10-20 gigabytes that can be achieved in the near future.
